MLB The Show 19 makes a trip through baseball history

Mar-01-2019 PST Category: MLB The Show

Most sports fans who follow their chosen campaign for more than a few years have memories that are filled with special moments. Whether they've experienced recent highlights or just learned about past stories and video clips from their favorite team, baseball fans can smile back and think about the full game off and walking home run and dive capture.

Baseball is a sport that has a special relationship with the past. This year, MLB The Show developer Sony San Diego brought some of the sport's greatest moments – from the recent history to the dead age – to life. In a new mode called Moments, players at MLB The Show 19 will have the opportunity to revisit and recreate the legends of the past few years. Developers are also committed to staying in sync with the future.

For MLB The Show, this may be a new area in which it used historically great people in a relatively limited way, using them as playable "legends" in the Diamond Dynasty and Buy MLB The Show 19 Stubs. But in the competition, there are many things to do in this series: many other sports game franchisees have done this and done very well. In the past few years, the NBA 2K series has come to mind. The Jordan Challenge focuses on Michael Jordan's career in the NBA 2K11 and the NBA 2K12's broader NBA's greatest model.

As you might expect, the core of MLB 19's Moments model includes an unforgettable collection of episodes in baseball history. Sony San Diego's idea is to focus on revisiting the past and present careers of specific MLB greats. You might play an indelible baseball moment like The Catch (as seen in MLB 19's first game trailer earlier this month), but there will be other in Willie Mays' career. A prominent moment puts everything in context.

In last week's hands-on demonstration, I revisited the MLB premiere of Ken Griffey Jr. on April 3, 1989. The goal was to complete at least one basic hit without a strikeout. (In real life, Griffith doubled his career in the first appearance of his career and finished the game 3 to 1 on the walk. I managed to hit it but couldn't hit it.)

One of my favorite Moments elements is Sony San Diego's return and builds a time-accurate player model for the model. You may have noticed two Tony Gwynns in the game trailer, a bearded version from his youth and an older, heavier version of his later career. This is not just a visual change: every iteration of the player will be based on the angles they have in their careers.

Unsurprisingly, MLB 19 cover player Bryce Harper is one of the prominent stars in Moments. This model replaced his career and covered his first season in 2012, where he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Personal moments include the All-Star Game, and 19-year-old Harper became the youngest player in the history of Major League Baseball. Of course, he is not the same player now.

These moments themselves vary greatly in scope and difficulty. Some are single bats; others track your performance in multiple games. Harper's "Time" mode section includes one of the long-term exercises: recreating the gorgeous data he presented in the 11 games of the summer. In some cases, you will play another history, answering questions such as "What if the Golden Barker Showalter brings Zack Britton to the 2016 AL Wild Card game?" and there will be "fantasy" moments. Like the old stars against today's top players.

Some of the most serious challenges in this model are called Play for Keeps. If you can finish them, you will be able to leave valuable diamond dynasty cards for the controversial MLB legend. The typical reward for Moments is Stubs' game currency - MLB The Show, which you can also buy with real money in the PlayStation Store - and XP. This may be part of the reason Moments needs an online connection, even if it is completely single player.

Another reason is that Sony San Diego will update the moment based on the new content of the 2019 MLB season and other historical moments. For those who are familiar with baseball history, the whole package sounds a lot, but we must look at the MLB The Show 19 will be launched on March 26.
